There’s a saying: “Every ending is a beginning. We just don’t know it at the time.” This was true for animal rescuer Lidia Elizabeth Reyes Cespedes from Chile.

Lidia was on her way to find a quiet spot to lay her old dog, Viejito, to rest when she encountered an abandoned puppy out of nowhere.

Known for her big heart, Lidia’s social media is filled with touching stories of rescued animals. Last year, she found an elderly stray dog near her home in Chile. Knowing it would be hard to find a family for an older dog, she decided to care for him herself. She named him Viejito, which means “Little Old Man,” and promised to give him a chance to feel love and warmth.

“I told him I’m going to give him a decent life for the time he has left. I expected him to live six months. He lived a year,” Lidia recalled.

After Viejito’s passing, Lidia and her friend went deep into the countryside to find a peaceful spot to bury him. Suddenly, they heard a puppy whimpering.

“I found a tree, beneath which we would bury Viejito,” Lidia said. “Then suddenly, we heard a puppy whimpering. We turned and saw this dog. We were surprised. We looked, and there was no one else around.”

The abandoned puppy appeared out of nowhere and seemed very happy to see Lidia. It was a significant moment as Lidia was there to say a final goodbye to Viejito.

Even more surprising, while Lidia was digging the hole for Viejito, the puppy stayed close by, watching everything. When the task was done, the puppy lay atop the mound where Viejito was buried.

When Lidia and her friend were ready to leave, the puppy perked up and started following them. So, Lidia took the little dog with her and named her Nube, hoping to find her a loving home.

In Chile, there are 2.5 million stray dogs and nearly 200 million worldwide. Sadly, many end up in shelters, and not enough people consider adoption when looking for a pet.
