Did you know it’s illegal to keep wild animals as pets in Brazil? But one special penguin named Dindim doesn’t seem to care about the law. He’s been visiting his best friend, a retired fisherman named Joao Pereira de Souza, every year since 2011.
Joao found Dindim, a South American Magellanic penguin, when he was covered in oil and very sick. After nursing him back to health, Joao was surprised to see that Dindim didn’t want to leave. And every year since then, Dindim swims all the way back to Joao.
“I love the penguin like it’s my own child,” Joao said. “And I think the penguin loves me too. He won’t let anyone else touch him. He even pecks them if they try. He likes to sit on my lap, take showers, eat sardines, and be held.”
It’s amazing how strong the bond between Joao and Dindim is. Despite the distance and the rules, they find a way to be together every year.
